Narrative:
My group and I discussed different ideas to do with the narrative of our music video for a fair amount of time, as we were all putting in different ideas and suggestions, we decided that it would be much easier if we decided the genre of our peice first, then going on to deciding our target audience, and then actually coming up with the outline of our narrative. As we already had the lyrics to our song and we had heard the song that we were making a music video too various amounts of times, we knew straight away what the genre of our music video would be, knowing what our song choice was, so the next thing we had to decide was who our target audience were and we decided teenage girls. We then came up with the narrative for our piece, and the storyline we came up with was basically the lead singer of our band is in love with the drummer of the band, although she's going out with the guitarest who doesn't pay much attention to her or care about her very much and puts his friends in front of her all of the time. We felt that this storyline could strongly relate to our target audience and given our setting (mainly the school), it is a recogniseable place for teenage girls and they would be able to relate to the story even more. We tried to put in a bit of romance within the piece too, as we know that (being teenage girls ourselfs) teenage girls love storys that involve love and happily ever afters, we showed the so called "happy ending" in the very last part of our music video, where the girl ends up with the good guy.
Camera:
When putting together our storyboard and deciding which shots we were going to use within our music video, we decided that we wanted to include a bit of variety, and we didn't want all of the shorts to look exactly the same, so we made sure that we included a bit of a difference within most shots. When we actually started filming our music video, we found that a lot of our shots that we had planned out on our storyboard actually changed, and we went with a totally different shot or idea, this, we found, actually related to the mood of the scene, e.g. when the camera was on nathan, and only nathan (the singer of our band) a lot of the time the camera was looking down on him, we felt this represented the girls outlook on him, and how he always tends to come second to her boyfriend, this is shown massively within the computer scene, where Nathan is trying to tell the girl of his dreams that he loves her, but something inside of him just can't do it. This shows a typical teenage issue, and how we can't sometimes say the things we mean, in fear that things will go wrong.
Another shot which we found very important was the shot where the girl finds the note in the bin and she opens up the note as the camera goes over her shoulder, this is so that the audience can see the note from the girls point of view, and your almost looking at the note through her eyes.
Throughout the piece we also wanted to see the relationship between the two of them grow, so therefore during the benches scene (where the good guy and the girl are hugging and talking) we zoomed in to the two of them, in order to show how their relationship has progressed, and how happy and excited the girl now looks now she is talking to the good guy.
Presenting of upcoming artist:
Throughout the whole process of our music video making, we had to stay with the thought that this is a new band, and therefore we have to present them in a way that the audience will be attracted to them, and remember them. We thought that the best way to do this is to create an image of the band, which will be recogniseable to our target audience. We decided that we wanted our band to be quite casual, although quite rock star-ish at the same time. We felt that we wanted to use "Organised Chaos" (our band) in the music video itself, so that the audience get an idea of who our band are, and they will recognise them just by seeing their faces. We wanted our band to come across as cool and quirkey, although quite serious about what they are doing and their music career.
Mise En Scene:
When creating each shot, we had to consider the Mise En Scene of our shot, and we had to do this for our video as a whole, and for each individual scene and shot. Here's an example of a shot and it's Mise En Scene:
For starters we had to consider the location of our shot, and we felt that as it was a scene where the couple are falling out, we wanted the location of the fight to be somewhere that may be a location where they could have first met, somewhere pretty and romantic, and we thought that a bench would be a good way of symbolising that. We also wanted to make the costumes very opposite, so we decided to dress the guy in very boy-ish, scruffy looking clothes, and the girl (me) wearing a dress, to show her innocence and the difference between the both of them. The faciel expressions of the two of them look very angry and the gestures they make are very negative e.g. when the girl puses the guy away from her, but then tries to pull him back when he walks away from her, leaving her by herself.
Characters:
We wanted to build up strong characters within our music videos, and we also wanted each of these characters to represent the each band members real personality in some way or another. We wanted to magnify each of the band members real personalities and put them into the video. e.g. Nathan is the smart one, who always tries his best to look presentable and cares a lot for his friends and would give anything for the girl he cares about whereas Pete is the sort of character who doesn't really mind much about having a girlfriend at any particular time aslong as he's got his friends around him, he also is very laid back and doesn't mind much about the clothes he wears and take the "I don't care" attitude towards things, the girl in our video (Rhianna, Me) is a very girly girl and cares about the person she is with a lot and is very sensitive to what they have to say and what they think about her. I believe that all of these personalities shine through within the video, although you see the good sides of these types of personalities through Rhianna and Nathan but you see the bad side of Petes within the video.
Audience:
When creating our music video and through the planning stages of our coursework, we had to take into consideration our Target Audience, as these are the most important people we needed to attract to our product, reason being, if we were creating a real media product, these are the people we would need to attract to our product to make any money at all. The target audience we decided to go for was teenagers, you will see when looking at our main product and ancinalary tasks that everything we have done links into trying to attract our target audience, and making our product look appealing to them, going from the colours we have used, all the way down to the lyrics of the song and so on (making it a relatable story for teenagers). The colours we used within our video were consistant throughout the whole package and matched the digipack and the website, the colour scheme we used was black, blue and red, we felt that these colours could be very uni-sex and are also quite bright, so would attract teenagers whether they be male or female.
The colour scheme we used is quite clearly shown below:
Visuals and Song:
When we were editing our music video we had to take into consideration our visuals and song, we wanted to make the images of our music video and the transitions from one shot to the next, fit the music to our song, so it flowed better and the story come across more powerful. E.g. during the scenes at the Secret Garden in Brentwood, the music is going very fast so therefore we made the transitions very fast and snappy and made the shots a lot shorter, to show the aggression and sadness within the scene, and then once Nathan came into the scene the music became a lot slower and light hearted so therefore the shots were a lot longer and the audience had more time to actually look at the relationship between the two of them and feel the connection between the boy and girl within the scene. We did this various other times within our music video as you will see when you actually watch the video.
